5 Common Organizing Mistakes People Make
They put off the project because they “don’t have enough time” to complete it.
Cleaning up a storage area, whether it be a closet or a garage, can be very intimidating. These spaces can take many hours to tackle, but the ugly truth is most of us don’t have those big chunks of time to dedicate to one thing. Don’t be afraid to take on a project 15-30 minutes at a time during the week and maybe an hour on the weekend. Those smaller bits of time will add up and your project will be completed before you know it!
They purchase storage bins and baskets first.
Picking out cute bins at the store can be the best part of the project, but the odds of getting all the correct items you need is slim. The best thing to do is go through everything you have first. Get rid of the items you aren’t going to keep or toss out any garbage. Once you see everything that is staying, decide how to best organize the area and make a list of everything you will need to execute your plan!
They Hang Onto Too Much Stuff.
It’s hard to let go, we get it. When you are organizing it can be exciting to find things you forgot you even had. However, it’s important to remember that if you haven’t used it in so long that you’ve forgotten about it, you likely do not need it. It can be difficult, but it is a great feeling when you’ve successfully organized things you need, rather than crowding your space with things you might use “someday.”
They Don’t Discard of the Discard Items Right Away.
How awesome are you?! You’ve made two huge piles of things to give away or sell. Now you need to make sure you follow through! Don’t throw a bag of Goodwill items in your trunk and drive around with them for months. Unless you have a high-priced item to get rid of, it will be best to give away everything in an effort to make it easier to get rid of your discard pile. Some charities even offer free pickup!
They Completely Fill The Space.
Yes, you’ve accomplished a major task by organizing a space, however it is likely that you will be adding to this area. Life changes, our interests change, and realistically we’ll be collecting more stuff. In order to keep this space organized you will need to leave room for additional items. Leave some extra room on your shelves and don’t fill all your storage bins. To avoid having this area get out of control again, try getting rid of one item every time you get something new.
